In contemporary Britain, protest has ceased to be a basic freedom. Rather, it has become a privilege that authorities grant or deny at their discretion. This constitutes the underlying meaning of new regulations that the current government is putting forward, which would dictate when and where demonstrations can take place, with potential imprisonment for those who defy these restrictions.

Erosion of Democratic Rights

Previous administrations had already weakened this essential right: the previous Tory administration had given law enforcement extensive additional powers, which global rights bodies had condemned as "significant and unjustified restrictions" on democratic freedoms. Taken together, these progressive assaults on liberty have effectively eliminated the historically earned right to freedom of protest.

Exploiting Atrocity to Justify Crackdown

The latest restrictive measures are being defended by citing last week's heinous antisemitic assault on a British mosque. We can all agree on widespread consensus that the safety of British Jews must be safeguarded. However, employing this horrific incident as a pretext to stifle dissent is not only unrelated to that duty but perverts it.

"When you cannot set boundaries at genocide, you probably cannot establish limits at democratic principles," commented a well-known American author, a statement that applies equally for the present administration.

Historical Perspective of Protest

Reflect on Britain's long tradition of protest and activism against racial discrimination and authoritarianism, from the 1936 Battle of Cable Street to after World War II Jewish groups opposing fascism and the 1970s mobilizations against the far-right organization. Many of these early protesters were labeled as extremists in their time, even while they were fighting for the rights of minorities.

Present Situation

In today's complicated landscape, here's what's actually occurring: Israel – a sovereign nation – is perpetrating acts that international bodies have characterized as systematic destruction. Its warfare have prompted the global justice body to release arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and his ex-military leader.

International public opinion has shifted dramatically against Israel's military campaign. In Britain, a substantial majority of citizens believe Israel has probably committed international law violations. Most people would endorse a complete ban on arms sales to the nation, and back the arrest of the Israeli leader.

Suppressing Opposition

Having essentially failed the public debate, Israel's supporters are now seizing on a vile anti-Jewish attack to try to silence a mass movement against a ethical disaster. The British government appears to be included in this attempt. Government officials have not enacted comprehensive sanctions on Israel and have permitted weapon shipments to proceed.

People who are protesting against the destruction of Gaza have been characterized as hateful extremists. Yet there's a important factor why there hasn't been a broader suppression on these demonstrators until now: very limited protesters have made genuinely hateful statements about Jewish people, giving law enforcement minimal reason to intervene.

Dangerous Conflation

Merging Jewish identity with the policies of the government of Israel is not only manipulative but also harmful. The official definition of anti-Jewish prejudice, adopted by the British government and numerous institutions, has been rightly questioned for potentially restricting legitimate criticism of Israel. However, there should be no disagreement about one of its key examples: that "making Jewish people generally accountable for actions of the state of Israel" constitutes prejudice against Jews.

Escalating Restrictions

This is why we've arrived at a point where law enforcement can suggest that protests criticizing Israel's policies should be canceled because they might "accidentally or intentionally" support anti-Jewish sentiment. Similarly, government officials have declared that recognition of Palestine as a nation has made political parties "implicated" in alleged abuse faced by Jewish communities.

Double Standards

On the same day as the synagogue attack, the Israel's army killed dozens of Palestinian civilians in Gaza – increasing the terrible count from two years of daily atrocities that have taken tens of thousands of lives. British politicians and media outlets have barely concealed the limited value they assign to Palestinian life. This represents one of the most brazen demonstrations of racism in contemporary society.

Breaking Boundaries

Our government has already crossed a dangerous boundary by proscribing Palestine Action, a peaceful, anti-genocide direct action organization. Thousands of British protesters have been arrested, mostly for holding signs against mass killing and supporting the banned organization. Many of those detained are elderly citizens; including a former clergyman and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

Global Comparisons

It's easy to see where this path leads. In the United States, political leaders helped vilify pro-Palestinian protests: a former House Speaker implied that some were "linked with" foreign governments, while the sitting leader described such protests as antisemitic. In doing so, they helped legitimize the authoritarian crackdown on such protests – and on free speech in general.

Looking Ahead

If a conservative administration comes to power, it would be given sweeping powers to control dissent. What might a new administration do with this repressive toolkit? Our ancestors fought, suffered and sacrificed their lives to establish our liberties. We may ultimately regret how easily we allowed them to be eroded.
