The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
