The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

An new term came to light a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts like child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. Officials rejects these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
