Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
