Soldiers vow to occupy national TV in Madagascar, presidency announces, amid concerns of power grab

Young people spearheaded countrywide rallies insisting on a better deal for citizens

Soldiers have threatened to take control of the government TV facilities in Madagascar as President Andry Rajoelina was expected to address the nation, his staff reports, amid unverified reports that he has departed from the country.

A French military plane is reported to have evacuated Rajoelina from the island island to an undisclosed location, following a fortnight of countrywide demonstrations intended to removing him out of power.

His failed attempts to placate young activists - dubbed "Gen Z Mada" - saw him dismiss his complete government and make additional agreements to without success.

On Sunday, his office said an effort was ongoing to pressure him out of power. He has not been spotted in visible since Wednesday.

Rajoelina's planned address to the nation has been put off several times - it was first due at 1900 Madagascar time (1600 GMT).

Over the weekend, a significant army division - referred to as CAPSAT - that helped install Rajoelina in power in 2009 proceeded to challenge him by declaring itself in control of all the armed forces, while some of its members aligned with protesters on the roads of the capital, Antananarivo.

After a meeting of defense commanders on Monday, the current Armed Forces Leader appointed by CAPSAT, Gen Demosthene Pikulas, promised the citizens that the armed services were collaborating to preserve stability in the state.

By Monday evening, the officer was at government TV facilities trying to settle the crisis, according to a announcement from the administration.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a high-ranking leader in Madagascar's largest rival party informed that Madagascar was now essentially being governed by CAPSAT.

The TIM party has additionally stated it intends to bring removal actions against Rajoelina for "neglect of office".

Several of Rajoelina's inner circle have escaped to close Mauritius. They consist of ex- Cabinet Head Richard Ravalomanana and the entrepreneur Maminiaina Ravatomanga.

In spite of its rich natural resources, Madagascar is counted as the most impoverished countries in the world. About 75% of residents there reside below the impoverishment threshold, while data shows about one-third of individuals have opportunity to electricity.

The rallies commenced over frustration with frequent water and power cuts, then escalated to reflect broader discontent with Rajoelina's government over elevated unemployment, corruption, and the financial crisis.

At least 22 civilians were killed and in excess of 100 wounded in the opening days of the protests, although the government has disputed these numbers.

Eyewitnesses describe security officers using weapons on civilians with real bullets. In an instance, a infant died from respiratory issues after being affected by tear gas.

Madagascar has been impacted by several uprisings since it obtained independence in 1960, comprising large-scale protests in 2009 that pressured then-President Marc Ravalomanana to step down and saw Rajoelina placed into office.

At the age of just 34 at the time, Rajoelina became Africa's most youthful leader - proceeding to govern for four years, then returning to power a second time after the 2018 election.

Rajoelina was coming from wealth and, prior to entering politics, had established himself for himself as an business owner and DJ - creating a radio station and an advertising company during this period.

But his sharp-suited, youthful attraction quickly waned, as allegations of cronyism and entrenched corruption became unshakeable.
