Scream Original Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
