Israelis have gathered around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.

A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war management of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."

"Once we see all home again, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester a participant remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the night comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Health Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated two more victims had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
