A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
