Environment Prize Nominees Hailed as ‘Heroes of Our Time’, Affirms The Prince of Wales
The Prince of Wales has praised the nominees for his eco-friendly Earthshot prize as “contemporary champions”.
Prince William is planning a trip to Brazil’s vibrant city next month for the awards event, marking the inaugural occasion the awards have been staged in the South American region.
The prize, founded by the royal figure half a decade back, awards one million pounds annually to five projects for their groundbreaking eco-solutions.
In the current cycle, there have been close to 2,500 contenders from 72 countries, with the winners to be chosen by Prince William and his Earthshot Prize Council, which includes well-known figures.
The list of nominees includes a tropical island nation to emerging enterprises.
Regarding the Environmental Award
This global initiative is a decade-long endeavor with past ceremonies conducted in major cities such as various international locations.
This year’s key event is set to take place at a renowned museum in Brazil on November 5th.
Notable Nominees and Their Initiatives
- Barbados has been shortlisted for its international efforts on climate, with the island on track to become free of fossil fuels by 2030.
- A major city in China is in the running in the “Clean our Air” section for electrification of its public transport system.
- Sydney’s Quay Quarter Tower is described as the world’s first fully “recycled high-rise”, preventing demolition and reducing carbon emissions.
- A UK-based firm, the sole nominee from Britain, has created a filter for laundry appliances that captures microplastics, a primary source of marine contamination.
“In my view, receiving this environmental award for me would be equivalent to winning an Olympic gold medal,” stated Adam Root, founder of the company.
The Royal’s Thoughts and Outlook
Through a recorded statement released to mark the reveal of this year’s finalists, he looked back on the past five years.
“Back then, a decade felt like a distant future. George was seven, Charlotte, five, and Louis two; the idea of them in 2030 felt a far-off reality,” expressed the prince.
“But today, as we find ourselves halfway through this critical decade, 2030 feels very real.
“2030 is a turning point by which future generations will evaluate us; it is the point at which our actions, or inaction, will have permanently influenced the path of our planet.”
He continued: “The people behind these projects are heroes of our time, so let us back them. Because, if we do, we can make the world more pristine, more secure and abundant with possibilities - not only for future generations, but for the lives we want to live now.”
This Environmental Initiative as a Key Project
This award program is now one of the key pieces of Prince William’s public work.
“He has successfully established an unprecedented network of entities,” commented a representative for the prize.
“Generous donors, the corporates, and the leaders who participate – it’s unprecedented to have a group of people collaborating on a single environment project in the way they have with the Earthshot Prize.”
This year, the Earthshot Prize events in Rio are in the run-up to the global climate summit scheduled in Belem on the fringes of the Amazon jungle.
