Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The US region famous for its historical past, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a dramatic transformation. New research finds that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The pace of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," stated a primary researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the American South," the researcher noted.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"This represents extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," commented the study author.
Notable Climate Trends
- Minimum temperatures are increasing faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being eroded.
Oceanic Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases.
In the region near New England, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being stored in the sea like a massive storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Consequences on Life and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has experienced extreme climate events in recent years, including devastating floods and prolonged dry spells.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or relocated multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Ski resorts have struggled because of insufficient snowfall.
"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely disappeared from much of the southern part of the region."
