Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Alerts Across Multiple States

These conditions follow this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds compromised the urban electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also caused major transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to create ongoing problems as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a valley known for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that left soils waterlogged.

Storm Brings Snow to Holiday Destination

Turning to Spain, a weather system has ushered in heavy rain, strong gales and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unknown at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the deepest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snow, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The effect of the storm is expected to ease this week with more typical conditions returning.
