Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants across the country and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is renowned for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."
This new purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to surpass his own record once again.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one elated diner.
